Decades ago, sitcoms used to show young and\nbeautiful people just starting their careers living in the \u2018big city\u2019 with\nlarge spacious apartments that were able to comfortably fit entire parties of\npeople inside of it (I\u2019m looking at you Friends). And maybe I\u2019m the only one,\nbut I really used to believe that\u2019s how life was going to be for me when I got\nout on my own. Boy, that couldn\u2019t have been farther from the truth. In reality,\nthose \u2018big city\u2019 apartments are far smaller<\/a> than I ever imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing how many people are making homes in tiny apartments<\/a> in the city, I thought it\u2019d be a good idea to impart some of the knowledge I gained while living in my tiny space. You know, some helpful ways to make your space more spacious than it would be otherwise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what I came up with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Store \u201cUp\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We are three-dimensional creatures, that means\nwe live in a world with width, depth, and\u2026 you guessed it\u2026 hight. Yet we still\nalways seem to put everything at eye-level. Instead, utilize the wall space you\nhave, place some decorative shelving up there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Floating shelves are one of the hottest home\ndecor pieces right now, and they’re just as practical as they are beautiful.\nTake advantage of that to keep your apartment chic, all while being efficient\nwith the space you have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Double Duty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once upon a time, Murphy beds were one of the\nbest ways to make use of what little space somebody had. They were a great\ninvention, that is until they became tropes for slapstick routines that\nseemingly overnight made anyone with a Murphy bed the butt of a joke. I think\nthe Cosby Show even had a bit about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, Murphy beds are making a comeback.\nOnly this time, they\u2019re chic, stylish and best of all, multi-functional.\nToday\u2019s Murphy beds can transform from the place you sleep to the place you\nwork in a matter of seconds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Part of living in tiny spaces<\/a> is having little\nto no separation between rooms. And if you work at home, this can be a huge\ndetriment to production. Room dividers can be a great way to provide privacy\nwhy doubling as great decor for your home. My favorite are those Japanese style\npanel dividers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No matter how large or small your apartment<\/a>\nis, there is one thing that you can count on, it will have windows. Use that to\nyour advantage. Sunlight illuminates the entirety of your apartment, getting\nrid of dark shadowy corners that tend to draw attention to how small the room\nactually is. Open up those blinds, and let the outside in. The hit of serotonin\n(the happy hormone) that you\u2019ll get from the sunlight will do more than\nbrighten up your apartment too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirrors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it’s not as much about creating more space than is about giving the illusion of there being more space; a mirror<\/a> is a great way to do just that. Well placed mirrors don\u2019t just make the room look larger, they also reflect the natural light<\/a> that shines in from the windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that, but mirrors are, themselves,\ndecorative and provide an excellent centerpiece for wall art<\/a> to go with. Plus,\nyou get to see yourself, and who can\u2019t get behind that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aesthetics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In apartments with multiple rooms, it\u2019s okay\nto go with intricate designs and color combinations. In tiny spaces, you should\nkeep colors to a minimum; it’s one of those less is more scenarios. Stick to\nabout two colors, then design the entire living space<\/a> to accommodate that color\nscheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throw in some wall art, throws, amazing bed sheets<\/a> and accent pillows, and you\u2019ve got\na beautiful living space that you\u2019ll be proud to call home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of my favorite things about living in a\ntiny apartment (I like to look at the silver lining) is that it forces me to\npay attention to economy of space. When you have a lot of space, you end up\nhaving a lot of crap with half your stuff being something you neither need or\nwant. But you got to fill space somehow, so you keep it anyways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I\u2019m just being the eternal optimist here; but living in a tiny space<\/a> somehow feels liberating. There\u2019s no clutter, and I\u2019ve still got the apartment of my dreams. It\u2019s just not as big as I thought it would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
